Jim received his BA in English from the University of Northern Iowa in 1993, and his JD from the University of Iowa School of Law in 1996. While in law school, Jim wrote for Iowa Law Review and served as an officer for various Law Clubs.

Jim practiced civil and criminal litigation in Iowa for three years before coming to Franklin County in 1999. He practices all types of litigation and mediation. Jim is a member of the American Trial Lawyers' Association and is on the board of various Waynesboro community organizations and the Rotary Club. Jim, his wife Amy, and their son reside in Fayetteville.
